Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a field of technology that enables systems to learn from data and make decisions. In after-school programs, AI supports student learning through age-appropriate, hands-on exploration of real-world technology.

The After-School Artificial Intelligence Program introduces students to the foundations of AI through an engaging, age-appropriate, and hands-on learning experience. Designed for upper elementary and middle school students, the program focuses on building AI literacy, critical thinking, and ethical awareness rather than technical coding skills.

Throughout the program, students explore what artificial intelligence is and what it is not by examining how AI appears in everyday tools, apps, and games. Core concepts such as data, patterns, algorithms, and machine learning are introduced through interactive activities, discussion, and real-world examples that make complex ideas accessible and meaningful.

A strong emphasis is placed on responsible AI use. Students learn how AI systems can make mistakes, reflect bias, and raise important questions around fairness, privacy, and responsibility. These conversations help students develop thoughtful perspectives on how technology impacts people and communities.

The program culminates in a collaborative capstone experience, where students apply what they’ve learned to design and present an AI-related concept. By the end of the program, students leave with a deeper understanding of AI, increased confidence in engaging with technology, and the ability to think critically about the role of AI in the world around them.
